60 years "Ich bin ein Berliner "

26 June 2023 marked the sixtieth anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s visit to Berlin. Yet apart from the famous – and somewhat misleading – phrase ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ from his speech, very little of this event has remained in the collective memory. An evening event at the Humboldt Lounge at N°3 Schinkelplatz took this historic date as an opportunity to examine the speech, the famous American president and the historical context of his visit to Berlin from various perspectives. Guests from the worlds of politics, diplomacy, business and the media were invited to attend.

In her address, Franziska Giffey – former Governing Mayor of Berlin and now Senator for Economic Affairs and Mayor – focused on the ‘prophetic statements’ in Kennedy’s speech. Christa Gleitze, who had watched the speech in person as a child, described the special atmosphere on that memorable summer’s day in 1963. The US Ambassador, Amy Gutmann, discussed the current security situation in Europe and Germany’s position – not least with regard to relations with the Kennedys – with former Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger. She also unveiled a portrait of Kennedy commissioned by FRANKONIA Eurobau especially for the occasion. The food and drink served that evening followed the official menu of the Presidential Dinner. Stefan Graf Finck von Finckenstein, a historian of science, journalist and honorary judge at the Berlin Regional Court, had organised what is believed to be the last original menu as a basis for the chefs.

THE WELLEM Salon

The Wellem Salon is located on the second floor of the Andreas Quartier. In the days of the regional and district court, this magnificent room served as the office of the president of the court. The authentic wall paint and stucco from 1923 have been fully preserved, which, in combination with the old windows, chandeliers, curtains and furniture, creates a unique, stately atmosphere. The modular table, a special design, can seat up to 20 people. With cabaret seating, the room can accommodate up to 26 people.

The Wellem Bar & Piano Lounge

THE WELLEM BAR & PIANO LOUNGE is located in the lobby, which is also a listed building and is regularly used for live music performances and numerous other events. The bar has set itself the goal of offering its guests the most extensive selection of exquisite spirits in Düsseldorf. Naturally, this includes a broad repertoire of international classic cocktails and perfectly tempered champagnes. The Piano Lounge, an integral part of the impressive entrance hall, is located directly opposite the hotel bar.
